Książ Castle and the Church of Peace from Wrocław: Which Day Tour?

5 min read

A pink castle with a green copper roof and tower behind a courtyard lined with statues

For most visitors the small-group Książ Castle and Church of Peace tour is the best fit. Of the four, it is the one whose listing promises the tunnels under Książ itself, it is limited to eight people, and it adds the church. Its listing names people over 70 as not suitable, so if that applies to you, choose one of the other three. If you want your own driver and your own pace, pick one of the private tours instead.

What you are going to see

Książ is the third-largest castle in Poland, and its listings describe it as the home of the Hochberg family for centuries. Under it runs a tunnel system that the Nazis built in the Second World War as part of Project Riese. The Church of Peace in Świdnica is a timber-framed church from 1656–1657. UNESCO lists the Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica as World Heritage since 2001 and describes them as the largest timber-framed Baroque churches in Europe (UNESCO).

The small-group tours

The 8-hour tour meets at the Nowe Horyzonty cinema on Kazimierza Wielkiego, lists an English- or Polish-speaking driver and audio guides in several languages, German among them, and visits the castle, the underground tunnels, the Palm House and the church. Two details matter for planning. The tunnels stay at 8–9 °C with humidity over 80 %, and the listing says to expect a lot of stairs, about the equivalent of five floors. Only children aged 4 and older are admitted to the tunnels, and the listing names people over 70 as not suitable.

The 6-hour tour is shorter and includes hotel pickup. Its listing names three sights, the castle, the Palm House and the church; if you want the tunnels, ask the operator before booking whether they can be added. Its audio guide is in English only. It names wheelchair users as not suitable and says children must be accompanied by an adult.

The private tours

The 7-hour private tour gives you about two and a half hours at the castle and half an hour at the church, with roughly 75 minutes of driving each way and 30 minutes between the two. You walk the castle with an audio guide and read booklets in the church. Its list of services mentions a visit to the castle tunnels next to food and gratuities, which are usually extras, so ask the operator whether the tunnels are in the price. It names people with mobility impairments as not suitable, and the gardens are on its programme in summer only. The 8-hour Project Riese tour spends an hour at a separate Riese site, then 40 minutes of driving to the castle. The listing says plainly that the castle tunnels are not part of it, and that Riese stays around 10 °C all year. It is the one to choose if the wartime history is your main interest, and the listing says it is not wheelchair accessible.

Whether to rent a car instead

Driving yourself is possible, but it costs you the guide and the two-stop logic of the tours. If you still want to, you can compare rental cars for Wrocław. The castle’s own visitor information says an underground ticket is valid only for the date and time printed on it, and that reaching the tunnels means a descent of about 50 metres, mostly by stairs; if you go alone, book ahead on the official castle site.

Before you book

Ask the operator which entrance fees your price covers and whether lunch is part of it; the Riese tour is the only one that says outright that the castle tunnels are not included. From October to March the castle gives the last entry for tours as 2 pm on weekdays and 3 pm at weekends, and its terraces are open only from April to September. For the smallest effort pick the 6-hour tour, for the most to see the 8-hour small-group tour, and for the freedom of a driver one of the private tours. More day trips are in the day trip category.
