University of Wrocław: Aula Leopoldina, Mathematical Tower and How to Visit
4 min read
Book the University of Wrocław tour with audio guide and admission if you want the Baroque Aula Leopoldina without queueing for a separate ticket. It lists the Museum of the University of Wrocław for 45 minutes and the Mathematical Tower for 30, with an audio guide in ten languages: German, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, Ukrainian, Czech, Russian and Chinese. The price is €17, and the listing has 123 reviews.
What the tour covers
The listing describes a visit to the Aula Leopoldina and the Oratorium Marianum, with sculptures, frescoes and ceremonial halls, followed by the Mathematical Tower for views over the city. The tour starts at plac Uniwersytecki 1 and a host or greeter speaks English and Polish. English is not on the audio guide list, so ask the operator what an English speaker gets. The ticket covers the entrance fee to the Aula Leopoldina, the Oratorium Marianum and the Mathematical Tower; the audio guide comes with it.
One detail matters for planning: the listing says the tour is 45 minutes inside the museum and then you continue “independently” to the tower. There is no guide at the top, so do not expect a walk-and-talk there.
Rooms can close without notice
The booking page warns that access to some rooms may be limited because the university hosts events. If a room is closed on your day, the operator says it will contact you to offer another time or date, and if that is not possible, you may not see every room. So read the live availability before you pay.
According to the city’s article on the university museum, it opens every day except Wednesdays, public holidays and Holy Saturday: from October to April from 10 am to 4 pm, and from May to September from 10 am to 5 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and until 6 pm at weekends. In winter, pick a start time that leaves the full hour and a quarter before 4 pm. The booking page lists wheelchair users as not suitable for this tour.
Is it worth it?
The Aula is one of the most elaborate interiors in the city, and the audio guide gives it context that a quick look would not. It suits a rainy morning or the first hour of a day in the Old Town. It is less suited to small children who will not stay quiet through an audio guide, or to anyone who has no interest in history or architecture.
Combining it with the rest
The walking tours compared in our Old Town and Cathedral Island guide pass the university or list it as a stop on the route; the private walk, for instance, lists it as a pass-by. This tour is the one that lists admission to the interior, which is the reason to book it on its own. Allow roughly an hour and a quarter for the two listed parts, plus the walk to the tower.
